Episode 107 – Confessions of a Reforming Malcontent

by admin on February 20, 2012

After a quick conversation on the need for branding, and how to address those needs without sounding like a self-involved prick, The show dives DEEP into personal histories of antagonism, and the darker natures that both Dawn and Bobby are constantly struggling to dismantle. These are the confessions of people who know how to be mean, but are trying to be better. Reflections of self-doubt, fights won, fights lost, fights better left unfought, the thrill of sour victories, and the agony of opportunities lost before they were ever offered to you. A circular, show about misunderstandings blending with the best of intentions.

This was another fine show! I think Bobby was a bit more self-absorbed than usual but I blame that on his week off from C&FB. I wanted to reasure him when he was complaining that he can’t make jokes on the fly as quickly as he could when he was 25. I’m willing to bet that if he has a recording of one of those fondly remembered sessions he’d find the humor much more shallow and simplistic than his current riffs.

The rant about serpentine belts made me shake my head in disbelief. Modern cars are incredibly reliable by any previous standards! You can buy any new car and drive it around the world (or an equiviliant distance) while only adding gas. If you do minimal maintenance you’ll get 100k out of it easy. Pop the hood now and then or cultivate a rapport with a mechanic. Most problems give plenty of warning before stranding you on the highway.

I found it funny how touchy Bobby got when someone made an Emerson joke about Cort & Fatboy. As someone safely ensconced in the intersection of that particular Venn diagram I would have thought that was the joke. Podcasts are interchangeable, ha, get it? I’ll refrain then from blaming Cort for the death of Whitney Houston.

Dawn did share a bit about what she’s building with the toaster parts of her life, I’m looking forward to seeing how the novel turns out, but she really let Bobby drive for most of this episode. This show left me wondering if the old Dawn was really as mean as she portrays herself or if that’s just her self-judgement filter cranked to the max. If she’s right then the old ascerbic tounged Dawn would have made a hell of a podcaster, or perhaps an AM radio personality. Move over Dr. Laura, Dawn is here!

It’s like – lets say you wanted to congratulate Dan Harmon on the returning of Community by quoting lines from Big Bang Theory at him. Again, I get WHY you’d do it, if you watched nothing but Big Bang Theory & Community. But it’s kinda awkward.

Also, as mentioned in the show, it’s cortandfatboy. All one word. :)

Anyway, apologies for talking so much. I’ll fade back a bit more next week.

cortandfatboy – yeah, typing that’ll take some getting used to. So are you veering away from being referred to as Fatboy in general, or just professionally?

I didn’t jot down anything to comment on – I think I got too wrapped up in just listening. Sign of a good show? I think so.

I think its just an overall thing – over the last year or two, pretty much everyone’s stopped calling me Fatboy. Or maybe I’ve just moved into a new circle of friends/acquaintances where usage of my nickname is minimal. But it helps that my facebook/twitter, and the iTunes metadata all just use Bobby, not Fatboy.

But cortandfatboy shouldn’t be that hard to get used to, as it’s exactly what you type in to visit the website. :) But on the other hand – even Cort and myself will sometimes slip and do it wrong.

Thanks!
