Episode 123: Of Apocalyptic Scruples and Accidental Vicodin

by admin on July 2, 2012

Patrick Hurley is in the house again. Kinda. Physically, yes. Mentally? Well, taking 1 1/2 of Dawn’s Vicodin before sitting in front of a microphone can lead to strange places in a conversation – such as trying to suss out the masculinity of the buttons on Bobby’s fire-red cardigan, adventures in chicken-fried steak, and discerning the masculinity of the buttons on Bobby’s sweater. A night of trying to play online poker leads to discussion of The Walking Dead game, and a quick game of Scruples: The Undead Edition breaks out, which then leads to a quicker game of Scruples: The Malevolent Redneck Kidnappers Edition, which of course leads to a discussion about reality television. All that, and some delicious sausage gravy.

You can’t only set horror movies in the eighties, you’d lose the “that could happen to me” vibe that makes watching clueless teens stumbling around in the dark actually scary.

Why not make our tech part of the horror? Steven King has proven it can be done successfully. Having the calm woman’s voice of a GPS announcing “You have arrived at the third circle of hell” would make my stomach clench.

Even if you only want to use the crazed killer plots you could use the helplessness of the callee to help the caller as a tension builder. I think there’s lots of room for fun with tech in horror but very few movies take advantage of it yet.

I will second Dawn’s endorsement of Slings and Arrows. It’s pretty magical, and if you’ve ever been a theater performer or know them well, the archetypes portrayed are pretty dead-on accurate. Plus it’s got some sort of distinctly Canadian quirk I like seeing. ALSO, rumor has it they may be bringing it back for a forth season! WOOT.

I love chicken fried steak, but haven’t had one in awhile. I have not had a chicken fried steak sandwich, as discussed in this show. One day? Eh…

I used to think biscuits and gravy were odd too when I moved to the Pacific Northwest from Hawai’i years ago. Noticed that it was not only a special at local diners, but I’d have friends who swore by it. There was a diner in Ellensburg, Washington, no longer there, but it was called the Blue Grouse. A friend and I were heading to a concert in Tacoma and he had biscuits and gravy. In my mind I was thinking “where are the eggs? Bacon? Ham? Some kind of meat?” I have tried it a number of times, and while not high on my choice of breakfasts, I would not hesitate to have it if there. In fact, I know there’s a hotel near the Portland airport where biscuits and gravy are the default “free” breakfast, and it’s awful. Biscuits are made from an unknown substance, and the gravy? Once it gets a bit cold, it ends up tasting like pencil erasers. Not that I have erasers in my diet but it’s free for a reason. Best to pay for something of quality or at least to your liking. Or just head to the Target down the street from the hotel and make a bowl of cereal.
